Twilight Sparkle goes overboard with black magic by AndyError Twilight Sparkle goes overboard with black magic by AndyError
Twilight Sparkle is trying a bit too hard and is starting to get consumed by evil. King Sombra must be happy about this.

This was my first time using Paint Tool SAI, my first time actually trying to draw something with my pen tablet, and my first submission on to deviantART. Seeing as I am a newb at this, it turned out better than I thought. What do you think?

not all black magic wizards have dark lines of mysterious origin on their hooves and body.

Only in the darkness can one see the light for what it truly is. Celestia was right to fear your use of Dark Magic, Twilight.

you can never go too overboard with the best magic ever

My thoughts exactly. Even the Princesses cannot grasp the true depth of the darkness. But Miss Sparkle can. Dark Magic is far more than crystals and shadows.

crystals and stairs are still epic though, just not the best part of dark magic

Oh my. Well. This is highly unsettling.

It looks really nice! Extra kudos for being your first picture with a tablet! Gosh, I really love the tentacle-spikey things running up her legs. They look gross and I love it.

I understand this is your first picture in SAI, but I would really recommend trying to lay low with crazy textures, I feel it's slightly overpowering in this. And the blackness over her horn really obscures what's going on there. I know it's supposed to be black magic, but I really think it could have been toned down a bit for clarity's sake!

Overall, I really, really enjoy both the concept and execution, I hope to see more from you!

Thank you for the feedback!

About the crazy textures, yes I realized that after I asked for criticism from an friend, and he said it is too busy and detracts from the focus of the piece. It seems I had too much fun playing with the different brushes that I forgot to critically evaluate my art!

And I see now what you mean by it obscuring the horn... Looking at my drawing now, I see that the horn is the secondary focus of the piece (it is where I look next after looking at the eyes), and with the bubbles+aura+purple fog, the focus is lost.

But then, it's not like the composition was that great in the first place... I did not have the entire piece in mind when I started drawing, and only later did I think of adding any of the background.

I feel I need to have a more complete plan in mind before adding details, so that the end product does not end up as messy as this piece. In the end, though, I see that I definitely need more experience, so that I do not rely too much on the popular subject of corrupt Twilight Sparkle and the fandom. I can see why it's popular though; it was a lot of fun drawing it!

Is my analysis here correct? I'm still new at this so learning to critically analyze art is good practice for me.

Oh goodness, thanks for taking it!

I understand where you're coming from though. I knew when I first discovered how to add textures and I went nuts, and ended up with some really crappy pictures. But that's a part of the learning experience!

I'm glad you can see it! I think it could have been lighter maybe make it glow in purple or something. As for composition, I highly recommend looking in to the rule of thirds, or the golden rule.

And you don't necessarily need a complete plan, sometimes some things come as a spur of the moment and that's awesome, I do however, recommend that you start doing thumbnails and try several angles and compositions before attempting a bigger picture. Also, a quick handy tip is to flip your canvas so it's mirrored. If it's flipped, your eye tends to stop over compensating for flaws and you can more easily see imbalances in composition and wonky anatomy.

The best thing you can do is to practice! I highly recommend doing tonal studies in grey tones. Look at famous painters and try to copy their styles, too. It's amazing help.

Also, you have to remember to not be too critical about your work. It's extremely demoralizing and it's crucial to feel good about your stuff every once in a while.

And as I said, this is still a lovely picture and I think you should be extremely proud!

Again, thank you! I will keep your tips in mind as I continue to practice drawing and also as I take drawing and design classes in college for my graphic design major. I never thought of flipping my art piece over to analyze composition; that sounds like it could work! xD

I am very proud of this piece of work; I never thought I could create something like this with SAI and a tablet on my first try. Now I need to continue practicing and improve upon what I know thus far, and I hope I can be just as proud with future works!

I know right?! And I'm sure we WILL see this happen in fan made comics/animation/fiction. Actually, I'd be surprised if it isn't already made into a fanfic or something yet. xD

Twilight isn't always the curious one. But of course we know black magic is not something to tampered with neither it's a toy to try out with.

Congratulations ~AndyError.
You received THE! WORST! POSSIBLE! THING! Badge for this amazing pic.

*imagines this happening in the premiere instead - Crystal Empire is doomed (then all of Equestria)*
*also imagines both King Sombra and the evil Twilight Sparkle ruling the land*

If this 2-part Season 3 premiere was turned into a video game, then this would be of course the Bad Ending.

It'd be a bad ending that everyone would be trying to get too, seeing how so much of the brony community loves giving characters dark sides!

And ~darkoverlords thank you! I love badges! xD

I would actually love to see this as a storyline in the show itself.

Twilight being put into situations where she has to use dark powers more and more, until eventually it begins to corrupt her, forcing her friends and even the princesses to try and bring her back.

Oh, yeah, now that I think about it, it would be really interesting! I serously doubt something like this can go in the show, but I'm guessing there's already someone, or probably many people, writing fanfics about corrupt Twilight Sparkle. ...There probably is already something out there; the internet is a fast place!
